OVER 100,000 COLOUR LOVERS. HERE’S WHY:
HOW MATTIE SEMI-PERMANENT COLOUR WORKS
Start with clean, dry or slightly damp hair.
Slip on gloves - colour goes on your hair, not your hands.
Apply generously from roots to ends (or only where you want colour).
Full saturation = the most even, polished result.
Let the colour develop for 30 minutes.
More time means deeper, richer intensity — you stay in control.
Rinse with lukewarm water until it runs almost clear.
No shampoo needed at this stage.
Mattie Semi-Permanent fades gradually over multiple washes, no harsh regrowth.
Want your colour to last longer? Use Mattie colour-safe care at your next wash.
TRY IT. LOVE IT. OR LET IT FADE.
Choosing a new shade shouldn’t feel like a gamble. This formula is made for even colour and high shine, then it fades softly with each wash — no harsh line, no long-term regret. V-Label certified vegan and ammonia-free, so you can switch looks with confidence.
QUESTIONS ABOUT SEMI-PERMANENT COLOUR?
Here are the most common questions about Mattie Semi-Permanent, answered clearly so there are no surprises – only great colour.
Will it show up on my hair — and do I need to bleach first?
It depends on your starting colour and the shade you choose.
On very light / pre-lightened hair: you’ll get the most vibrant, true-to-shade results especially for pastels and bright fashion colours.
On natural medium-brown hair or darker: results will be softer (more of a tint/reflect than a bold, opaque colour).
On dark brown or black hair: semi-permanent colour cannot lighten your hair — you’ll mainly see a coloured sheen/shine (for example a red glow with Coral Red).
For pastel or very bright shades (like Soft Pink, Aqua, White Toner, Rose Gold or Denim Blue), we recommend very light blonde / pre-lightened hair for a true, vibrant result.
How long does it last — and how does it fade?
Mattie Semi-Permanent is designed to fade gradually with each wash, so there’s no harsh grow-out.
Based on typical use and hair type:
On pre-lightened / bleached hair: colour can stay visible up to around 14 washes, depending on hair type and care routine.
On natural medium-brown hair or darker: results may fade faster and look softer from the start.
What affects fading speed:
Very light/pastel shades fade quicker than deeper shades.
Frequent washing, very hot water, anti-dandruff shampoos, and strong clarifying shampoos fade colour faster.
Will it damage my hair? (What’s it free from?)
Mattie Semi-Permanent is a direct-dye cream with a mask-like texture. It sits mostly on the outside of the hair and is much gentler than permanent colour.
It is:
100% vegan & cruelty-free
Free from ammonia, peroxide, PPD & parabens
No developer required
Because it’s conditioning and non-oxidative, most people experience hair that feels softer, smoother and shinier after rinsing.
How do I use it step by step?
- Prep: Prep: Start with clean, dry or slightly damp hair.
If needed, wash once with shampoo (no 2-in-1). Skip conditioner before colouring. - Apply: Put on gloves and apply generously and evenly from roots to ends (or only on the areas you want to colour).
- Process: Comb through for an even result and leave on for 30 minutes (within this range, longer usually means a more intense result).
- Rinse: Rinse with lukewarm water until the water runs almost clear. Towel-dry gently and style as usual.
Always follow the instructions on the packaging and do an allergy test 48 hours before colouring.
Do I need a developer — or can I mix / dilute shades?
No developer needed. Mattie Semi-Permanent is ready to use straight from the bottle.
You can:
- Mix shades together to create custom colours.
- Dilute/soften shades using the Mattie Pastel Mixer for a pastel result.
Do not mix semi-permanent colour with permanent dye, bleach, or developer.
How do I remove it faster or switch shades?
Semi-permanent colour fades by washing — but you can speed it up without a remover:
Level 1 — Gentle fade
- Wash a bit more often and double-shampoo (two lathers).
- Use lukewarm-to-warm water and rinse thoroughly.
Level 2 — Faster fade
- Use a clarifying / deep-cleansing shampoo 1–2 times per week.
- Always follow with a conditioner or mask.
Level 3 — Fastest fade (short-term)
- Use an anti-dandruff shampoo to strip colour faster.
- Expect it to feel more drying — condition afterwards.
Switching shades is easiest by:
- Going darker, or
- Softening first with Pastel Mixer before applying a new shade.
If your hair is very porous or heavily pre-lightened, pigment can hold longer. For a full reset or major correction, a professional stylist is best.
Will rain or sweat wash the colour out?
No — rain won’t wash the colour out. Semi-permanent colour fades gradually over multiple washes, not from getting caught in the rain.
